Recent Jacksonville Job Closings and Job Losses

The Jacksonville economy has recently seen a slight upswing, especially as it relates to new jobs and investment, however, it comes at the end of a long economic drought. Aonvoy Plastics, a 45 year-old Jacksonville company will cease operations at the end of March, with its managers citing the poor economy. The Aonvoy Plastics plant has 35 employees, but has been downsizing in the last few years. The number of employees at one point used to be as high as 145. Aonvoy is not alone either. In recent years, several manufacturers in Jacksonville have been forced to shut down, including Galaxie Boat Works and Astro Air. Almost 500 people have lost their jobs as a result.

In 2011, the job losses were spread across various industries. The credit intermediation industry, employer of more than 23,000 workers in Jacksonville took a hit last year. The Bureau of Labor Statistics report on Jacksonville for 2011 says that the 200 workers in this area lost their jobs altogether. Local Government, which hires roughly twice as many people, lost roughly the same amount of workers, and came in next on the list. Other industries that had to let go large numbers of workers were the telecommunications industry, and construction, which saw more than 500 workers let go. The Federal Government also let workers go. The Federal Government employed 18,000 workers in 2010, but saw 700 of them lose their jobs in 2011.

 

Finance and Insurance, however, were the areas in which the city had the most people let go. There were 46,200, people employed in this area in 2010, but that number was cut to 45, 400 in 2011.
